The film stars Shah Rukh Khan in his 40th film, and the third release for Priyadarshan's production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, after the blockbuster hits, Aashiqui 2 and Aashiqui 2: Meet AJay.
The film was a huge commercial success, becoming the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of that year, and the highest-grossing Hindi film of that year. It became the third highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. In 2006, an unofficial 3D version was released by Shree Narain Films, with a heavily altered storyline, which met with mild commercial success.
Plot
Harpreet Singh Ghuman (Shah Rukh Khan) is a struggling artist in a group of talented musicians, playing in bars and hotels. He meets Rimi Srivastav (Aishwarya Rai) who is a rich industrialist's daughter, and they fall in love with each other. However, before they can get married, Ghuman and Rimi's father, Mr. Srivastav, who is also a businessman, refuses to sanction their marriage. He threatens to disown Rimi if they marry, but Ghuman still loves her, so he hires a handsome actor, Azad Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) to pretend to be Ghuman.
Azad Khan is initially reluctant to perform at the Srivastav family wedding but Rimi manipulates him into doing so. Ghuman and Rimi are married and everything is fine. However, Azad soon realises that Rimi loves her old boyfriend, Amrish (Javed Jaffrey), and is unhappy with Ghuman. Azad soon falls in love with Rimi and plots to get her out of her marriage with Ghuman, but when he tries to blackmail Rimi into an affair, she blackmails him into buying her a house, with her shares of her father's company. Soon, Azad is cheated by Rimi's ex-boyfriend, Gurdeep, who is also her employee and a co-owner of the company. Azad is humiliated and on the verge of suicide, Rimi tells him that she loves Ghuman. He is overjoyed and reconciles with her, and they soon get divorced.
